Female Entrepreneur and Mother of 14, Shea Terra Organics Founder Re-Defines the term ‘Mom-preneur’!
‘Mom-preneur’ is a term that has been thrown around frequently over the past few years, as more and more mom’s set out to launch their own business while simultaneously managing a household. An undeniable feat for any woman who is trying to balance the demands of motherhood, as well as working full-time, but Tammie Umbel is embracing this title like no others before her.
Tammie was already a mother of seven—with her eighth on the way—when she launched the Shea Terra Organics line. Now this mom extraordinaire has 14 children that are all home schooled and a thriving skincare line that any entrepreneur would be proud of.
For Tammie, it is dedication to both her family and her brand that has made her story a success–her children were literally by her side as she developed her first formulation for the line. As the brand grew, so have the endless stories of piling the whole family in to a 15-passenger van to go visit the manufacturing plant or to work a tradeshow—all of which proved to be perfectly suitable places for the children to work on their homework and studies.
“It’s not like I’m superwoman, it’s just that things have to get done and I find a way to accomplish them,” commented Tammie Umbel, Shea Terra Organics Founder.
Always interested to give back to impoverished communities, Tammie was on a mission to launch a business that would do more than provide a product, but also offer a resource for people to earn an ongoing living.
“I remember watching the commercials for Feed The Children when I was younger and they really had an impact on me,” said Tammie, “But I wanted to do more than provide a meal for the children, I wanted to come up with a plan to provide people with an ongoing resource to enable them to care for their families and villages.”
A practicing Muslim, it was family trips to Africa with her husband and children where Tammie discovered new ingredients that had yet to be introduced to the US market. As she learned about the healing properties of ingredients that are indigenous to Africa and have been used by women in rural communities for centuries, she became intrigued. Maybe this was what she had been searching for. A way to empower women to be self sufficient and sustainable doing things that they had always done, but in a way that provided them with a continual income, preserving their culture and heritage. And that was how Shea Terra Organics, Tammie’s “other” baby was born.
In the beginning organic Shea Butter was the foundation for the brand’s initial products. Now argan oil, camel’s milk and other therapeutic ingredients have been incorporated into the Shea Terra Organics line. By sourcing the most potent, organic and wild harvested ingredients from across Africa, Tammie has been able to create products using whole herbs, for their synergistic benefits, that have grown in pristine environments unaffected by modern pollution.
“People are very surprised when they try our products,” says Tammie. “They actually work and some of the improvements they have seen on their own skin as well as their children’s even surprise me. Now, after all this time, I can see that even the slightest change in sourcing an ingredient can affect the entire product, so we are meticulous in being able to trace the source of every ingredient we use. ”
This attention to quality and authenticity is what has made Shea Terra Organics so popular with consumers. Over 25,000 Facebook followers regularly share their success stories and Tammie has never lost sight of why she started the company.
“There is so much inspiration and good that comes from Shea Terra Organics,” commented Umbel, “The company infrastructure is a trifecta of sorts as it provides an income for underdeveloped areas, offers a conservation plan for the indigenous ingredients and gives consumers a line quite like no other, with pure ingredients that are active and deliver results.”
Tammie, who resides on her Virginia farm with her family, has always made her family a priority. As she raises her 14 children—ranging from 5 months to 22 years old—she has never lost sight of her priorities as a mother and a practicing Muslim. But as most successful ‘Mom-preneurs’ can attest to, the drive and passion Tammie had for the Shea Terra Organics brand allowed it to become a driving force of its own.
